DVD’s, Jpegs, Mp4′s: These are the new digital negatives to the modern bride and groom. Unfortunately most people don’t know what to do with them, and are using and storing them improperly. DVD’s are the new storage medium for your wedding files. They’re small, light, convenient and universal. Unfortunately they are also easily damaged. DVD’s are susceptible to heat damage and the surface can scratch easily. Both heat and scratches can render portions or your entire DVD unreadable. All your wedding files . . . . . GONE!!! IF you ruin your favorite movie, a quick trip to your neighborhood video store and $9.95 will replace it. Your wedding DVD, not so easy!!!!!!!
So, now that you’ve received your wedding images from your photographer, what should you do with them?
First, you should always store your DVD’s in a DVD case. Sounds simple, but most people don’t. A single DVD contains more data than 6 CD’s, thats 4.3 gigs per disk. The data bits are more densely packed on the disk, therefore, the DVD’s are more easily scratched, and those scratches can make that area of the disk unreadable. A DVD case will support the disk by the center spindle without anything touching the surface. Dont use envelopes or sleeves. These are made for CD’s only.
Next, make copies. LOTS OF COPIES! They are easy to make. Most computers can duplicate a DVD. If you’re not sure how, now’s the time to make that techno geek friend. Any 13 year old will do. If you have a safety deposit box, that’s the perfect place to store your original disk, along with an extra copy or two. Cool, dark storage is the best place for your wedding DVD. When you misplace your wedding files, and I guarantee you will, you will thank me. I get at least 4 calls a year from frantic brides who have lost their disks.
If you don’t have a safety deposit box, make two copies of your DVD. Put them in DVD cases, and wrap them up in a nice protective box. Give one copy to your mother, and the other to your mother-in-law for safe keeping. First, they will be thrilled with your gesture of trust. Second, they will put them with all their most precious possessions, your baby pictures![]()
